The book is a short mirror of some of the most embedded problems of Romanian post-communist society, reflecting the discarding by the local institutions of those less fortunate. A cousin with whom he had served the final years of his sentence had taken him under his wing and gave him roof and food in exchange for Alberto acting like some sort of bodyguard and help. His love interest, Alberto, had entered into a reeducation system at 14, because he had committed aggravated assault (coming from a very poor, disintegrated family, with a violent father), and he had spend 14 years in the penitentiary system. The narrator (the PhD student) is a 30 years old and he is gay. In his endeavors, he meets an ex convict, whose help makes the research possible. A PhD student whose thesis concerns an ethnic kind music moves in one of Bucharest's poorest neighborhoods in order to gain easier access to the community and its customs.
